New York, NYWHY IT'S A GREAT ROAD TRIP SNACK:
Sour Patch Kids are great because the citric acid in the coating mixed with the sweetness creates a flavor profile that is addictive.SERVING TIPS:
Open a bag. -
Fruit and Yogurt Oatmeal Parfait
SUBMITTED BY:
Galen Newton
Los Angeles, CAWHY IT'S A GREAT ROAD TRIP SNACK:
Dress up boring oatmeal with fresh fruit and yogurt and you've got a travel friendly snack with three major food groups: dairy, fruits, and whole grains.SERVING TIPS:
Use your hotel coffee maker to heat water for the oatmeal, then pack it into sealed plastic containers for the car. Like oatmeal cookies, it's still good when it's cold. Don't want to travel with fresh fruit? Substitute dried fruit that you can pack in your luggage. -
Dried Apple Rings

Brooklyn, NYWHY IT'S A GREAT ROAD TRIP SNACK:
They're no mess, no fuss, and low calorie. They have a natural sweetness so they don't taste good for you -- the perfect low fat candy.SERVING TIPS:
Sprinkle with a little brown sugar for extra sweetness or add peanut butter for a nutty treat. Add dried cranberries or pineapple for a dried "fruit salad." -
Cucumber Sandwiches
SUBMITTED BY:
Katherine Wells
Brooklyn, NYWHY IT'S A GREAT ROAD TRIP SNACK:
They're the quintessential accompaniment at a classic Maine clambake, but it works beautifully as an On The Road summer snack. I love it for its simplicity, and because it enables us to spontaneously enjoy summer's bounty from roadside vegetable stands.SERVING TIPS:
It's helpful to pack paper towels, a vegetable peeler and a tomato knife for on-the-go prep. -
Cold Combo

Glen Rock, NJWHY IT'S A GREAT ROAD TRIP SNACK:
It accompanies us on our six-hour drives from New Jersey to Vermont, and is an easy to eat, tasty lunch.SERVING TIPS:
Make an oil and vinegar dressing with a higher than usual amount of vinegar. Season it with salt, pepper, and oregano and mix thoroughly with a whisk. Cut the bread lengthwise not quite all the way through so it opens like a book. Make a bed of lettuce and onion shreds on one side of the bread. Drizzle the oil and vinegar dressing over the lettuce. Tear the meat and cheese slices into inch-wide pieces. Lay alternating layers of cheese and meat on the initial lettuce bed, drizzling a little dressing on each layer, until you have as many as you like. Finish with a layer of lettuce and onions and more dressing. Close the sandwich and wtih a bread knife cut inch-wide slices, but again not all the way through. Wrap the finished sandwich in plastic wrap. A sandwich made like this in the morning and eaten at midday actually improves as the dressing soaks into the bread. -
Spicy Sun-dried Tomato Wrap

Jaime Lillo
Tampa, FLWHY IT'S A GREAT ROAD TRIP SNACK:
Its portable, easy, delicious, and no mess! I also like that it can be varied to suit your preferences or what's in the fridge.SERVING TIPS:
Use a whole wheat or sun-dried tomato tortilla. Spread on cream cheese and sun-dried tomato spread (in produce section of most grocery stores). Layer Salsalito or another spicy type of deli turkey with baby arugala or field greens, and sprouts. Roll up tortilla and fillings, cut at an angle, and Saran wrap or foil into place. Toss on top layer of cooler or lunch bag, unwrap when ready, and eat up! -

Angel Toast
SUBMITTED BY:

McGehee, ARWHY IT'S A GREAT ROAD TRIP SNACK:
It is French Toast made from angel food cake. It is great because when you bite into it for the first time it is such a surprise. The warm buttery caramelized outside gives way to the soft delicate inside. Served with fresh strawberries, it is the perfect Spring Sunday Breakfast!SERVING TIPS:
Slide Angel Food Cake into about 1/2 inch thick; dip into a mixture of egg and cream; saute in butter until golden brown on each side, top with strawberries for breakfast. Also, you can add a scoop of vanilla ice cream, starwberries and whipped cream for an unbelievable variation of a strawberry shortcake dessert. -
Fruit By The Foot

Allen Norman Hansen III
Index, WAWHY IT'S A GREAT ROAD TRIP SNACK:
It makes me think of my childhood, and who doesn't love Fruit by the Foot? My friends used to dare me to shove the whole thing in my mouth in elementary school, but I'm not as young as I used to be.SERVING TIPS:
There's not much to think about with this snack, but everyone should get his or her own. I wouldn't want to share. -
Mishmish
SUBMITTED BY:
Elizabeth
Takoma Park, MDWHY IT'S A GREAT ROAD TRIP SNACK:
Mishmish is the nickname for the fabulous sheets of dried apricot paste you can find in most Middle Eastern food shops, as well as many organic and whole-type food markets. My mother started packing this in our school lunches when I was a child in Beirut, and it's been a staple of mine ever since.
SERVING TIPS:
Like Oreos, each person develops a personal style of eating Mishmish: rolled up like the lesser, American versions of Mishmish; slowly sucking on the edge of a piece until it becomes elongated and near-transparent like taffy; or just cramming bits into your mouth as fast as you can. It packs well since it's a movable feast in the first place -
Carrumbers

Fort Collins, COWHY IT'S A GREAT ROAD TRIP SNACK:
My almost daily snack is simply sliced carrots, celery, cucumbers, and any other crunchy, filling veggie that is dipped in "Creamy Cucumber" salad dressing. Cheap and easy --that's why someone like me (a poor person) loves it so much!We all make a version of this for snacking; I just use the BEST dressing in the world for it.
SERVING TIPS:
After taking your veggies out of their store wrapping, slice them as desired, then use your trusted plastic storage container to soak them in lightly salted water in your fridge overnight. Drain the water in the morning, and they're ready to munch ... but not before pouring 1-2 ounces of "Creamy Cucumber" or "Cucumber Ranch" salad dressing for dipping.
