Bravotv.com: Designing for a judge, did you sense the designers were more nervous than usual?
I think it was clear they wanted to please Isaac in a way that was different from obviously wanting to get his blessing each week. They wanted his respect and to show some "homage" to his style board and his references … .and I think it was a good challenge, as they had many great options to work off of.
Bravotv.com: What looks were your favorites/least favorites?
My least favorite look was the one that unfortunately ended Lidia’s chances. I think the dress was too ambitious, and did ultimately look sloppy and not sexy. I know there was also an issue of a not great collaboration, as I don’t think there were any personality problems between Lidia and James-Paul, but their two pieces clearly did not belong together. They should have made that work and not have done two entirely separate garments, but as was said in the show, the cape had an interesting idea behind it.
My favorite look was the outfit Merlin and Johnny did. I loved the pale pastel plaid — it was very Isaac. I liked the colors, the top, the jacket with the bone/horn buttons. It even worked in the “felt” that Isaac hates so much. I thought it was very chic all around.
Bravotv.com: What did you think about the fight between Reco and Daniella?
I think it was silly, but not unexpected. It is clear that they are both serious contenders, and it’s a competition, and neither is going to give the other an inch. From the start it was clear that they would hate having to partner with each other, but spools of thread make for some interesting partnerships … and they both are very opinionated. Reco has a very strong and sometimes obnoxious attitude, but he’s a good designer. Daniella is young and stubborn also, and tends to mask a very strong streak with her youth and feminine smile. In the end, I wouldn’t be surprised if they become very good friends.
Bravotv.com: What is your take on the topic of collaborating, compromising, etc.
Life in general and success in any career is about collaborating and cooperating. Compromising is an entirely other story, and no one ever feels good about compromising their style for the sake of another’s. But this is a game, and on TFS they are all competing with one another, and winning is the end goal, and they should do whatever it takes to win. It is also difficult when they are thrown together, especially with someone they have made very clear they do not like. After working on their own-having to work as a team can be tough, but it can also be a blessing.
If is a bit unfair however when a “team” creates a “look” that only one of them gets eliminated.
"If is a bit unfair however when a “team” creates a “look” that only one of them gets eliminated."
The team concept has go to go. If the final outcome is only one winner, it is absolutely unfair to put them in teams especially when you have different skill sets to consider. You wind up with folks who should be eliminated skating by on the skills of another and folks who are talented on the chopping block.
It's like forcing two designers who are in fierce competition to work together so their lines can fail and allowing another less popular designer's line to flourish as a result.
It makes no sense unless the purpose of the teams is to rig the competition and allow less talented designers to win.
Is it? All you're doing with these ridiculous rules like audience judging and teams is piss off the viewers who see talented designers get screwed and people who should go home *cough*Johnny*cough* stay.
I really miss the Project Runway and Heidi, but TFS is a great second best and I am enjoying the show. I'm a fan of the craftsmanship of the following contestant’s work: Reco, Merlin, and James-Paul. I believe that Angel did deserve to go home on the last episode because she didn’t rise to the challenge and educate herself. However, I found it really odd that the judges thought it was unacceptable that she was not familiar with the definition of a “b-girl”. I have lived all over the US, in over 10 states, am a frequent world traveler, have studied overseas, am a highly educated, professional working in Washington, DC who spent many years in the club scene and I have never heard of a the term “b-girl”. I asked quite a few people around me also and they had never heard of it either. I thought is was interesting that the judges found it “offensive” that Angel didn’t know the term. The judges mentioned that everyone should know the term because they watch MTV, etc. Well, not everyone in the US and the world watches MTV (including me). Its interesting that the judges look at the world through their own lens and lash out at others for having a different background, experience and perspective on life. Very respectfully, I find that offensive.
You MUST bring Veronica Webb back as the co-host along with Issac. Kelly brings no insight whatsoever to the designs and borderlines mocks the designers. Veronica's comments were insightful, knowledgeable, and actually brought some crediblilty. Bring her back as cohost...PLEASE!
If this show is going to succeed ,and be a serious contender for next seasons line up of Bravo's shows, then somebody had better regroup .Kelly needs to be replaced( not hating mind you), but she just does not come across as a credible judge of high fashion design. I think she would be good hosting a teen competition show, or something in that category. The team concept needs to be ditched . I can understand the designer's reluctance to compete as a team. Nothing is more frustrating than having to work closely with someone you cannot stand. I do not think that inspires creativity, but stifles it,because most of your energy is directed at trying to force yourself to operate in a negative environment.
Reco,Reco,Reco is the best designer. I would buy all of Reco clothes. Everything that Danellia design is very old looking and i am a senior and i wouldn't wear them. That black blue dress was old looking something from the 40's. merlin, Johnny and james paul is a little out there for me but the young set would wear it and thats what its all about. Recos design is so professional looking and wearable for any women. Young or old. I like the show better than Project runway but NO MORE TEAMS. I dont watch for the drama.
To Kat Wil: I get your message about plus sizes, but the word is "voluptuous" not "volumptuous." That word is characterized by sensual pleasure. Maybe that was your intent! You go, girl! But I think what you are trying to say is full-figured. Women don't have to be slender to be beautiful!
There should be more high fashion for that market and not just skinny models.
i think everyone was awful to angel. neither i nor any of my friends and daughter, who is 32, knows what a b girl is. angel should have been judged on the qualtiy of her work. kelly said she was insulted be what angel had made. kelly is just a singer. i would think a b girl woiuld be a bitch,. that certainly is kelly. fern said everyone knows what a b girl is. not so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi, again. I forgot to add: please consider hiking the sizes of the wonderful fashions that win the talent compeitions for those of us who are more volumptuous and curvy than any model I've seen on TFS. In other words, give the plus-sized women a chance to wear some of these great outfits. Thank you.
Hello all! I truly enjoy the show. I don't watch any "reality" television -- and whether or not TFS is real :-) -- I'm getting a real kick out of the contestants, the challenges, the clothes, the hosts (It was soo good to see and listen to the fantabulous Veronica Webb last night!!) and the enormous amount of talent (and egos!) exhibited on the screen weekly. For me, Reco is the best and although I couldn't vote last night as to which designer could give Mr. Mizrahi a lil' competition, I agreed with the majority -- Reco. Daniella is not likable -- for all of the reasons stated above -- but she is holding her own with some creative folk and she deserves her props for that. I hope Ms. Mallis is correct; it would really be great to see Reco and Daniella friends (if they aren't already, huh?) and create together.
Merlin and Johnny rocked it this week as a team. Merlin did a fabulous job on the patterns and execution which brought to life Johnny's inspiration. But the jacket is too avant garde and the construction too complex to sell in Bravo's online store. But that's what avant garde is all about: an exaggerated look which is modified for popular clothes. A much simpler version of that jacket (even in felt, Isaac!) would be great with jeans. And the skirt is adorable.
This week, again, you say you want color, and again, vote black! (But that's what you are mostly given.) I certainly wouldn't have chosen Daniella's floral pajama-gram pants! I felt sorry for Reco! When I look at the online shop, everything is black with the tiniest bit of color. Isaac's line is inspired by vibrant colors, but even he votes black! Anna and Haven's design was cloaked in black until the color reveal of a little blouse. Does that really identify with Isaac's inspiration? No. Oh well ...

Would you PLEASE stop making them work in teams! Allow these kids to express themselves to the best of their ability and not have to worry about personality conflicts. It was not pleasant to watch such talented people as Reco and Daniella have ego conflicts. I found myself feeling their pain and frustration. Leave all of them alone and allow their creativity to emerge. This "high school" mentality of bickering is getting old and this viewer watches for the creations, not the drama behind the scenes.
I am not sure Isaac is open to constructive critisism, thus am asking you. I want to see this show suceed.
Thanks
I think Lidia's dress looked gorgeous especially in comparison to Daniela’s pants. However, Lidia was eliminated, mainly because she was not making dramas like Daniela was. Sorry... but you eliminated great designer just because she was not noisy and was doing her job. Well… it does not really matter since this show is not really “real” as I thought should be. By watching this show it was proved to me that most of the participants are no more than highly scripted and poorpaid thespians.
Dear Fern;
Thank you for your unbiased comments here and your continued even tone as judge on the show. You definitely nailed the flaws and triumphs of the designers' work.
Finally, the correct designer was eliminated. When asked, "Who was this dress made for?", she was confused. She probably liked the silouette without thought who could look good in it. Your question brought her back to earth. It's a pity that she didn't consider the effects on her idea before she started sewing.
I'm confused about Reco/Daniella's design ranking low. During the show, it seemed as though Isaac liked the shape and you seemed to concur. What changed your mind?
PLEASE!!! DONT LET RECO GO HOME! ME AND HUNDRED OF VIEWERS WOULD BE DISAPPOINTED IF THAT HAPPEN. HE IS A VERY TALENTED, CREATIVE AND FOCUSED DESIGNER. HE HAS A STRONG PERSONALITY AND HE IS SERIOUS ABOUT HIS CAREER AND WE ALL HAVE TO RESPECT THAT.
Fern, what is Kelly Rowland doing on this show? I thought Veronica was a breath of fresh air! Atleast she has a clue and brings some expertise as well as sound critiques to the designers. Kelly Rowland is a singer, how is she considered an auhority on fashion? As I watch the show, I get more and more furious when she opens her mouth. In an effort to just tune her out, i try to concentrate on you and Isaac. I figure, there must be some logical reason why Kelly is there. Just havent figured it out yet! Love you though Fern, you and Isaac.
Hi Fern,
I agree with you on Merlin's and Johnny's outfit, it was absolutely beautiful, even with the felt jacket. Is that why it did not win, the jacket? I think it was the best. I liked the winning outfit even though I did not like the blouse at all. I would never wear those wooden things anywhere on my clothes, they looked like wooden teeth.
On the dress that sent Lidia home, I agree it was a disaster but I think Daniella's pants were way worse. At least the dress could be fixed or "tweaked" but those pants! There was nothing you could do with them except throw them in the garbage. U-gly. I have always found Daniella's style very old fashioned. But not cool old fashioned, just old fashioned, "square", kind of early 90's department store.
I think Reco was very smart to let Daniella go with her idea of the pants. He knew she was going to crash with those pants and she needed to be taken down a peg or two. I hope it will teach her a lesson. A slice of humble pie?
I did love that coat that Anna made. She has made several excellent coats.
I have two suggestions for to add to the final or the website: Give a special award to the designer that wears the most creative outfits and tell us whose design sold the best on the Bravo store. Please?
And you dont think Daniella is obnoxious? That little girl has waaaay too much attitude for her age...she is soooo over powering it is impossible to deal with her...you have to admit between Daniel and Reco...Daniella was in the wrong big time...Reco is waaay more experienced than her...bottom line!
