Grow a Set!

"Joy wanted to be the “star” of the salon. WELL, looking and behaving that way is not how to make yourself stand out and shine!"

November 10, 2009

I like Pablo, but I don’t think he had any idea what he was getting himself into when he bought Allure Salon, because being a receptionist and being a business owner are worlds apart. Pablo let himself be treated as the gofer of his salon he had no rules, he didn’t tell his staff what was expected of them and he did nothing to market or promote his salon. In fact, Pablo was afraid and intimidated to tell his staff anything, which meant they had no respect for him as a boss. It’s hard because Pablo isn’t a hairdresser and will never fully understand the craft, but as an owner, I had to teach him to grow up and get a set of balls!

Many of the staff at Allure had been there for a long time and because they had gotten away with things for so long they had become lazy and complacent Joy being the worst offender. There were so many issues with Joy - her attire, her bad attitude, and her lazy work. The fact that she told me several other employers had pointed these flaws out to her and she refused to change actually told me that I was going to have a battle on my hands and I did! Joy wanted to be the “star” of the salon. WELL, looking and behaving that way is not how to make yourself stand out and shine!

Tabatha I LOVE YOUR SHOW! I have to ask where did you buy your black and white polka top in the Allure Salon show? I just LOVED it and would love to get my hands on one.

Wonderful show. I'm curious, how many shops did Tabitha take over during the first season of the show, and of those shops how many remain open?

I just discovered your show and love it! The principles of running a successful small business apply to many industries. As a customer, I also feel more savvy about how to pick a good salon. Thanks so much!

Dear Tabatha i love your show, i'm not much into the hairstyling deal. But i used to clean up at night at my uncles hairstyling shop. And some of the things i've seen on your show , i've seen some of the people who work there over the years do. You remind me of my uncle , he holds the same standards you do. And besides i like seeing people sweat.

The is my Favorite show ever!! I love how you handle everyone!!!

I love the show and the people on it really need the help but I would love to see the shop locations be a little more realistic. California, Florida, Texas, Chicago, and New York are great but these little small town country shops can really use the help too... even if it means a celebrity will probably never be strolling through the door.

Tabatha,
I absolutely adore you and your show. I am always surprised by how receptive most of the stylists are to your discipline and firm approach. It shows that deep down, most people want to work among other people with a strong work ethic and pride in their workplace and product. Those who don't are being lazy and complacent, like you say, and need to find their true passion because they probably haven't yet. As a soon-to-be mom, I take this lesson to heart. I'm not saying I'm going to be the strongest disciplinarian ever, but I think children also want boundaries and strong guidelines, and as a parent, just like the salon owners, you have to suck it up and be a role model yourself even though it can be easier to give in or try to be the child's friend.

Anyway, thanks so much for being such a great tv personality and I hope to see much more of you in the future!

What was Joy talking about when she said she came a long way from South Dakota doing 'Mullets and Perms.' I'm from South Dakota, and I can tell you an abundance of permed hair is something you see there, not exactly the style. As for the mullets, where was she living there? In the event that anyone sees a mullet prancing around anywhere in SD, please send me a picture, because that's an even greater rarity than the perm posse.

I LOVE your show. I love your hair and your sleek style. Love the fact you always wear black! looks great with the platinum hair.
I agree with you 100% I would be the client and if I'm not getting the service and quality I deserve and pay for I don't go to that salon. As a black woman my hair care is expensive and chair hopping isnt the way to go! I could easily be bald.
The hair business is a million dollar industry and I want what I pay for. The shop cleanliness and the way the stylist hair looks and how they present themselves MATTERS!

Tabatha,

My best friend, ex-coworker, recently took over her father's shop of 30 years after his wife died and she was a laid off. It seemed like a blessing at the time and could be with the right assistance. She is trying to make the shop successful so she can draw an income but doesn't know what to do. She's tried updating the shop, hiring new stylists and marketing but nothing is working. She believes that it can be successful but is at a loss. Will you please help me, help her succeed? I have no doubt that you can figure out the problem. She's a hard worker and dedicated. I didn't know how else to contact you and hope that this gets to you.

Thank you!

Hoping for help in Tampa.

Tabatha I wish I had the complexion for platinum blonde hair because I'd love to wear my hair in a style/color like yours. I think it's just so chic. Can you recommend a blonde tone for someone with medium olive skin??

I love Tabitha. She's so inspiring because her example makes you want to step it up in every part of life. She's Hot! I love her quick witted intelligence.. I want to marry her!!!

What a fantastic Show. Tabatha makes it fantasic! I am a manager vice president of a company and watching the show really opened my eyes. It helped me to ensure that i did not accept less than quality works as it relates to the customer experience in our business.

I will keep watching!

Love the show and never miss an episode even if it involves tevo. I realize the focus of the show is to teach business people in a certain industry how to be more competitive, successful -- but I'd love advice for the consumer. How do you shop for, select, and feel confident with your choice of salons and stylist?

Being a cosmetologist and wanting to be a salon owner one day I am completely in love with this show. Tabatha I love your direct, tell-it-like-it-is style, I swear, I think it and it pops out your mouth sometimes. I look forward to each new episode, I hope your show is here for a long time to come, I think it's a great thing and a long time coming, because this industry needs someone who is passionate about it to help save it. There are way too many unprofessional, dirty and poorly run salons out there that need a wake up call. My clientele has been built on those things alone, I fix more than I create and I think that's sad. Thank you Tabitha for helping to save this industry, your an inspiration.

okay i don't even do hair but i've loved this show since the beginning, BRAVO, WHY THE HELL AREN'T THERE ANY FULL EPISODES ON YOUR SITE?!!! TABATHA'S STRAIGHT UP AND TELLS IT LIKE IT IS AND YOU WANT TO LIMIT WHEN SHE CAN SAY IT?! come on and step it up, nobody wants to see all housewives all the time (and i like all the damn wives too). Go on Tabatha with your bad ass self!

Tabatha,

I love the show. Keep up the good work.

Todd

I am so glad your show is back, Tabatha. Loved this episode because everyone got with the program and stepped it up. Pablo's business aspirations are admirable and it looks like you got him on track. He's adorable, too. I especially loved Joy's turnaround - and her cute bangs - at the end of the show. All the best!

We love your show. We know of a beauty shop that sure could use your help. We have been following our beautician around for 19 years. She now owns her own shop. She is a excellent beautician but sure could use your help to keep it open. Please email us if you want more information.

Thanks and keep up the great work. You are great no matter what some of the people you work with say.

I am from South America, and I find you irresistible. I'm not only seduced by your beauty, but by your personality and passion for your career.
The fact that you expect nothing but perfection is such a turn-on.
Anyway, I hope I don't get censored by Bravo, or come off as crazy, and I just wanted you to know you have such a huge admirer.

I wish you the best.

YOUR SHOW ROCKS.!!!
First and foremost. ALl THE GAYS LOVE YOU .
we also love the way you work with the talent and staff at these salons and help make them become successful. You truely are amazing and why not do a Barber Shop with all men. WE need you also .

Greetings, I like your show! Of all the so called reality TV shows this is one of the most useful. My daughter is a cosmetology student. She and I watch the show together so that she can get expert advise on what to do and what not to do. I seen some filthy conditions at places I've gotten my hair done, and some behaviors that you would not believe. One time the stylist kept leaving while doing my hair. I discovered she was smoking crack and trying to function as a stylist. You know I didn't go back. You are wonderful and sometimes over the top and we LOVE it!!! We look forward to the rest of this season.

Wow , Sister fister ! I just love and adore you . I'm appalled with the salon's and stylist that have been in the business for so many years that don't have the pride and value for their client's . Where they subject their clients to unsanitary conditions and behavior that makes one want to vomit . I'm a new solo stylist and business owner . I have to admit I have some faults , yet cleaninness is a must ! I would love for you to visit my salon / art gallery / cocktail bar . And have a cocktail with me so I can pick that amazing brain of yours . Bee's to their knee's Baby !

Tabitha you are a true professional. I LOVE the way you carry yourself and how you revamp those salons. I have come to believe this industry is straight ghetto and it is only as professinal as you make it. I am a salon owner in Maryland who has the hardest time keeping employees due to the level of professionalism I hold my employees to. As well as the policies and procedures manual, no one wants rules in the salon. They want to do what they want and not feel as though the clients should be treated with the utmost respect. Without clients we do not have a job. How do I find and retain professionals who are willing to work? If you are ever in Maryland please contact me I would love for you to come to my salon.

Hi Tabatha, you crack me up. You are so funny in the way you crack that whip. I can plainly see that you have a sense of
humor and any stylist that doesn't take your advice is beyond help. You exude professionalism and that speaks volumes. I have
been a hairstylist for 25+ years and have been diagnosed with Diabetic Neurothopy (nerve damage) in my legs/feet. Taking massive amounts of narcotics everyday makes it impossible to actually enjoy the craft. It was a great run and at 50+ I think I will get off the stage before they "carry" me off the stage. haha I knew you would enjoy that IF you get to read my blog admission. I love your show and if any stylist was lucky enough to work in your salon (which I am sure not easy to be hired) they would be privy to wealths of knowledge. When I was a major dept store in KC MO managing a fairly large salon, there was a lady that had spent thousands and thousands of dollars to enjoy advanced training and would shut her private door as to not let other stylist take her education into their own business. She would even through hair brushes at us. So to make a long story short, she was selfish but entitled. Never understood it but what is your thoughts? Happy Holidays!

You rock !!! I like your style of telling it like it is , more people in the business need to hear this . You are one tough lady but you are caring.......... We look forward to each up coming week to watch your show , we all meet at my house , make a bowl of popcorn and get ready to watch the show with (balls) , keep it up !!!!!! Ladies from AZ salon

HI MY NAME IS VICKY SHARP I HAVE MY SALON AT DAYTON TN & I LOVE TAB. SHOW!

Tabatha,

It's surprising that Pablo would be able to purchase a salon with zero hairdressing skills and no business training. What was he thinking? Voila! Once again, you transformed a failing business into a winning enterprise. You truly are a magician. I never thought your could transform joyless Joy from the "unhappy hooker" into a solid stylist.

OMG, Pablo is doing a much better job now. I think next he should at nail technicians like myself to the salon and make it a full service.

Love the show. I'm so glad you helped Eddie and Orbit. He's such a nice guy.I wish you would give Kim of OC some advice on her wigs. They cost a fortune but the new one just didn't do her justice. Any advice for her?The next time i go to the salon I'll be taking a really good look around. You might be getting an S.o.s. from me.

Dear Tabatha,
We do enjoy your show but have one little problem with it. In our humble opinion your profanity and that of other stylists is not very professional and has no place in the salon. We have never tolerated language like that in the entire history of our salon. Which is a considerable number of years (about 50) since we are second generation owners. The original owner Miss Audrey would tell you with her considerable Southern charm if you walked into our business and used that language to clean up your act or not let the door hit ya where the Good Lord split ya.

Tabatha,
I love your chutzpah and I wish that I would've had you around when I worked with a bunch of unprofessional people. You're polite but not too nice, and now I see being too nice can make people mistake you for a doormat. I think you can teach business tips to all people, not just those in the beauty business.

I can't wait to see your show every week. Love, love, love your show!

Tabitha,

I love love love your show. You are also gorgeous. I am a fifty year old black woman who desperatly needs a hair style. I had so many overy the years, I can't even count. Now that my kids are all gone....I want to Wow me. Do you have any ideas? I am 5' nothing and 120lbs. Long hair makes me look crazy and over whelmed. My face is real long and I hate its shape. Any ideas I am desperate. I am tired of being the ugly duckling wall flower.

A Fan,
Penny

Tabitha,
I have lived in NJ for 2 1/2 years now and CAN NOT find a decent hair salon for cut and color....I live in West Orange, NJ (Northern NJ) and was wondering if you can suggest a good hair stylist and salon in NJ. Most of the stylist have hair styles that are so dated and I feel like I am getting my hair chopped up and having trouble styling it now. Thanks! love your show.

TABATHA... i am a shampoo girl at a hair salon. Things at the salon are going crazy. My bosses two salons hav merged together,we have things every were.It is a true mess. One of the ladys that i work with is the meanest to my boss. she bosses my boss around like she owns the shop. My boss needs help growing a back bone. A couple of the lasdys have tried to teacher how, but shes is not all the way there yet. I would really love it to if you could just teach everyone what there job is. We have a receptioist that think she knows everything about everything going on at the shop. She also cluters the desk to the point were sometimes people can not find anything. Some times i feel like a pack horse. Somedays we are just so busy, and the mixture of everyone not getting along and everyone is bossing everyone else around makes it comepletely rediculess and not fun at all to work. No one hardly ever gets along with each other. I dont know if we have money problems or not, but we do have problems with everyone working together, and respecting each other. We also hav a lady that shows up when ever she wants to to work. Please helps us Tabatha, somedays its okay workin there, but others its a living hell.

Tabitha,
I love your show. My daughter and I can't wait to see each episode. One question for you--why do you wear black clothing all of the time?? Best of luck to you!

Tabitha,

I love u! You are an amazing person. I love your directness and you just don't put up with crap at all, and you're an ADVOCATE FOR THE CLIENTS which we get overlooked all the time!!! I'm a huge fan of your show. I can't wait for next week. I suggested on your facebook page to do a black hair salon and I see you were able to find one for next week's show. I CAN NOT WAIT TO SEE THIS SHOW!!!!
I just wanted to write you and say thank you so much for your show!!! I want to be a hair stylist so bad. If I ever do it, I will MAKE YOU PROUD!!! I'm really into professionalism and excellent service and design so I want to bring that to the profession.

I love Tabatha.
She doesnt stand for peoples crap.
She is a strong woman that deserves respect.

Tabatha maintained her composure very well when dealing with Joy. Joy should have been penalized in some way for acting out in that manner. Pablo should have at least suspended her without pay for a couple of weeks. At Joy's age and position, most be understand the difference between being strong and being a jerk - Tabatha is strong and Joy is an out of control jerk. Pablo has not stood up to Joy and on some level Joy will think she can still get one over on Pablo and her co-workers. I would have fired Joy.

I work in a salon in Massachusetts and have for the past 11yrs. 2 of the biggest complaints I've heard were, cleanliness at other salons and professionalism. I work in a salon that is not only spotless, but we all get along and help eachother out, so that no one runs behind and clients are not waiting. Also I think that alot of hairstylist don't further their education. This industry changes constantly and stylists need to be able to accomidate their clients. Tabitha's show is awesome. From a professional licensed hairstylist, I think that if alot of salons or stylists watched this show, There would be alot less complaints. THANK YOU Tabitha. Your a breath of fresh air. Plus your color and cut are fabulous.

I love your show and I would like for you to come to nashville, TN one day and straighten out some of these wanna be professional salons. I have a question for you. I have very thick/ course hair and I can't seem to get it to grow anymore. I have cut it short and it grew down to my neck and it stopped. What do I need to do in order for my hair to grow down to my back.

This show is awesome. Tabatha is very talented. She's tough, but knows what she's doing. Joy was in denial and needs a new wardrobe. The 21 year old owner is intelligent and well-spoken and seems to have a great chance at being successful. Take some hair styling courses though.

Tabatha,
I am writing to ask a favor of you. In late September of this year I started attending MJM Institute of Cosmetology. My instructors recently got fired because the owners of my school couldn't afford to pay them. The salon does not get much business at all. When it does, the customers are usually older people. So, we mostly only get to do basic cuts and rollers. The salon is stuck in the 90's and it's very unsanitary. The girls attending are always fighting and are acting very unprofessional. The owner and her husband are the only people there who aren’t students now. The owner is terminal and has been sick for years. Her husband hangs around the school because he got laid off from his job and is too lazy to go look for another one. I am very afraid that if there is not a change at MJM, my school will get shut down and I won’t be able to get my license in cosmetology. This school used to be the best in my town of Grand Junction. Now it is just run down. I would very much like to learn what I need to the proper way before my school gets shut down. I would like to be in a more professional environment so I can be ready to start in the business. So I ask you, how can I enter my school? We need help.

I am in the middle of watching the joy episode, and you are patient to wait for an epiphany! I would have fired her bad attitude ass ages ago!

Tabatha,

I'm writing you because someone that I love is in dire need of your help!!! My boyfriend has a family owned and operated salon in North Palm Beach, Florida. Their business has been successful in the past but in recent times he is having a really hard time making ends meet. We are trying to start a family and get married all the while relying on the success of the business. The main problems they face are getting employees to stay working for them, lack of managerial experience, family conflicts, lack of retail display, only to name a few. If you are able to help us, I would forever be greatful to you!!!!

I think Tabatha is terrific. She is so motivational with her work ethics and drive.

The way that some salon owners run their businesses is shameful. It gives the entire industry a bad name. Where are the health inspectors in these states? I have been in business as a salon owner and stylist for 15 years and I pride myself on the condition of my salon. It is a direct reflection of your professionalisim, abilities, and talents as a stylist and business owner. It also shows respect to clients to have a clean, organized and welcoming atmosphere. You should have another show showing the world salon owners who give 110% everyday for their salon and clients.www.avessa-salon.com

I think you rock!!!

Tabatha,
I love your show. I am a stay at home mom and don't have much time for myself. I feel my salon time, is my time. In the last several years I have left salons and stylists for gum smacking, dirty stations, having to listen to stylists on the phone while doing my hair, and my favorite constantly checking themselves out in the mirror. I pay a lot of money to have my hair done. I should leave the salon loving my hair. Keep up the good work!
Meredith
